IMG International Medical Graduates
The Ontario International Medical Graduate Program was created to allow graduates of international medical schools residing in the Province of Ontario the opportunity to practice medicine here. IMGs are able to obtain a license to practice by fulfilling the existing Ontario medical licensing requirements including residency training.
Residencies that are currently available for IMGs include: family medicine, general internal medicine, general surgery, orthopaedic surgery, anaesthesia, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, psychiatry, diagnostic radiology, community medicine, radiation oncology and laboratory medicine.
IMG-Ontario is the main point of entry for IMGs seeking registration to practice in Ontario. IMG-Ontario works in cooperation with the Council of Ontario Faculties of Medicine (COFM), the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) and the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term-Care (MOHLTC). Funding is provided by the Government of Ontario.
IMG-Ontario does much more than select candidates for the 200 training and assessment positions that are available for IMGs each year. It also provides information and support services to help IMGs understand Ontario's regulatory and postgraduate systems, and can make referrals to other organizations that offer resources for IMGs.
Appllication forms and information are available on the IMG-Ontariowebsite.
