Faculty Appointment
To obtain a McMaster University part-time faculty appointment, current ROMP preceptors must have CCFP or Royal College certification and must submit an R4 Form provided by the ROMP office. This form is necessary to complete the process for faculty appointment.
The R4 Form outlines explicit details of department expectation for part-time faculty. The Education section must be filled to reflect the clinical teaching and supervision of postgraduate and/or undergraduate medical students that has been negotiated with all parties. There is a standard time commitment expectation for part-time faculty; i.e. 100 hours/year. This amounts to approximately two hours of credited teaching per week when spread out over the course of the year or more when concentrated in a briefer time period.
When someone supervises a student, he/she is not credited with every hour that the student is on site, rather they are credited for outpatient supervision in half day blocks.
Obviously there are many part-time faculty members who do more than 100 hours of teaching. Those who undertake major commitment have the opportunity to receive certain University benefits as delineated at the bottom of the R4 Form. All preceptors are encouraged to participate in the ongoing improvement and development of the program.
ROMP preceptors who wish to teach residents must have a university affiliation in order to teach residents from all Ontario Medical Universities. Undergraduate teaching does not necessarily require CCFP nor is it necessary to apply for a faculty appointment through McMaster. A current university appointment with another university does not impede affiliation with ROMP. However an application to teach for ROMP must be complete and can be obtained from the ROMP office. Note, ROMP provides the same level of support and development for both undergraduate and postgraduate preceptors.
