Rotation Setup Information for International Medical Learners
The Rural Ontario Medical Program (ROMP) cannot set up rotations for international learners. An international medical learner who wishes to set up a clinical rotation in Ontario must do the following:
- Find and confirm a preceptor.
- Register the rotation with an Ontario Medical School.
The ROMP office cannot help International Medical Students find a preceptor but we may be able to provide the contact information for an educational coordinator in a ROMP community. Since not all communities have an educational coordinator, we also suggest that a useful searching tool is the website for the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario www.cpso.on.ca. Searches through this website can be run to find a specific physician in a specific community or to find all phsyicians practicing in a certain community.
All international medical learners must register their rotation with one of the following Ontario Medical Schools: McMaster University, University of Toronto, Western University, or Queens University. To work in the ROMP region, all international medical students must register with McMaster Univeristy. McMaster University will not register international learners until the learner has a preceptor confirmed.
**When registering a rotation with the University of Western Ontario or the University of Toronto, a preceptor can be arranged through the school and, therefore, does not need to be confirmed before registration. The Univeristy of Toronto only arranges rotations in the Greater Toronto Area and the University of Western Ontario only arranges rotations in the SWOMEN area.**
Once a preceptor is confirmed and the learner is registered with McMaster University, ROMP will complete the paperwork to insure hospital privelidges for the rotation. ROMP is unable to fund rotations for international learners, but will help a learner find accommodations, if needed.
In order to begin the credentialling process please complete the following steps:
- Submit an application for the rotation through the ROMP website.
- Obtain a letter of good standing from your medical school and provide a copy to the ROMP office.
- International Residents must register their rotation with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO). For registration details please call CPSO Registration Inquiries (416) 967-2617 ext. 221. You must be registered with an Ontario Medical School before you can register with the CPSO and registration can take up to 4 months.
- Set up accommodations. We have contacts in all of the ROMP communities for accommodations. It is the learner's responsibility to pay for the accommodations but we can supply learners with a housing list or contact information for a person in the community in which you will be working.
If you have any questions about this process or would like any contact information please contact ROMP at 1-877-445-7667, via email at romp@romponline.com.
