Past Rural Medicine Weeks (RMW)
The Rural Ontario Medical Program has been helping to coordinate medical rotations for trainees since its inception. Rural Medicine Week was an initiative created to allow first and second year medical students the same dynamic and unique experiences on a smaller scale.
Since medical students generally do not get a chance to gain hands-on clinical experiences, Rural Medicine Week operates as the introduction to practiced medicine. This week also allows for communities to showcase their assets, welcome the students and foster relationships that will bring the learners back to their community throughout their training.
The first two Rural Medicine Weeks were held in Collingwood for a few students in 1997 and 1998, but by 1999, the week was growing in popularity and more communities were becoming involved.
