Wasaga Beach

Population: 16,000

ROMP Region: Two

Wasaga Beach is a relatively new town; although settled in the early 1900s, it was not incorporated into a town until 1974. Until then, the community was comprised mostly of cottages and seasonal business that would close during the winter months.  During the depression, as people from Toronto lost their homes and their jobs, they began to move to Wasaga Beach for permanent residency.  The beach front became crown property in the 1950's to protect the region's reputation of being a safe and appealing summer retreat.

The population of Wasaga Beach has grown more rapidly than many Canadian communities.  In 1974, the population was only 4,034.  Today the population is divided with two categories; there are 16,00 permanent residents and 16,000 part time residents.  In addition to these two population numbers, Wasaga Beach experiences over two million visits per year.  Due to its linear geography, Wasaga Beach has several complexes with stores and restaurants instead of a single downtown core.

Wasaga Beach is home of the Southern Georgian Bay Community Health Centre, which provides healthcare to the community along with several other physician offices.  Physicians working in Wasaga Beach typically have hospital privileges in Collingwood.
