ROMP History
The Rural Ontario Medical Program (ROMP) was created by Collingwood physician, Dr. Peter Wells, in 1988. Evolving from a conversation between him and the Medical Staff Coordinator at the Collingwood General and Marine Hospital, a need was recognized for a program that provided medical training in rural communities.
At the time, there were only two programs in Ontario that worked with medical trainees outside the academic centre: The Northwestern Ontario Medical Program (NOMP) and the Northeastern Ontario Medical Education Corporation (NOMEC), both located in the north. Dr. Wells visited NOMP to gain insight into their program with hopes of creating a similar system in the south. He titled the resulting program the Rural Ontario Medical Program (ROMP).
The importance of participating in electives outside the academic centre is the core of ROMP's existence. Community based rotations serve two purposes; they enhance the realm of exposure a learner will receive during a rotation and they give learners a chance to explore a geographic region that interests them. Often, the staff at ROMP, hear from learners that their rural rotation changed the way that they 'see the world'. Learners soon realize how much they can learn outside the academic centre, as the scope of practice for a rural family physician is very broad.
"[My preceptor] was the best I have ever worked with. He is very enthusiastic about teaching and operates in a very friendly diligent work environment. He offered plenty of opportunities for me to practice my procedural skills and I saw many patients on my own. He encouraged me to focus on my learning and was a great source of information".

The ROMP office has expanded over the years; many employees who work in different facets of the rotation process and office function. The success of the Rural Ontario Medical Program resounds through our boarders as medical trainees return to their rotation sites throughout their education and as new physicians.
"I hope that you take the opportunity to explore a region and participate in a rural rotation. South central Ontario has so much to offer; each community and region is unique and these rotation opportunities are unparalleled experiences that will expand your understanding of rural lifestyle and medicine."
